This month Canyon Lake

Every month we will check out a new waterway so you will have a new place to try and kayak.

This month we went to Canyon Lake, located East of phoenix at 16802 Arizona 88, Tortilla Flat, AZ 85219

Amenities include multiple boat launches, access to fishing, picnic ramadas, picnic tables, playground equipment, docks for fishing, and hiking trails.

This is a lake that covers about 950 acres, which worked out for a two day kayak trip.

A group of 12 of us went up to Canyon Lake for some camping and fishing from the kayak action.

We spent a few hours fishing mostly with just nightcrawlers and caught some sunfish some bass, I'm told there are also catfish, carp, and crapie in the lake although we didn't reel any of these in.

We set up camp at the Russ cove area good size area big enough for all our tents. Another great option is The point campground this area has a dock and pit toilets.

On the second day we paddled our kayaks into crucifix gorge and then did a day hike back through the gorge some good scenery with some ancient ruins. We spotted a large group of big horn sheep hanging out on the north side of the main lake area. The water felt about 60 degrees perfect for jumping in and cooling off.

I would definitely recommend this lake for a nice day or multi day trip, especially to beat the heat of Phoenix. Good scenery and a short drive.

This lake becomes a popular boating lake for water skiers during the summer months. However there are still plenty of areas to paddle where the big boats are not allowed.

Check back soon to see a new place to get out and enjoy Arizona!
